ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT
Chromium's description
A connection attempt timed out.
Chrome shows it as net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT, error -118. puppeteer and Playwright report the same name when a page fails to load in Chromium.
Common causes
- The server is down or overloaded and does not accept new connections.
- A firewall silently drops the connection (it does not reject it, which would be ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED).
- The DNS record points to an old or wrong IP address.
- Your own network, VPN or ISP blocks the site or the port.
How to fix ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT
- Check whether the site is down for everyone, from another network or with the screenshot tool on this page.
- Flush your DNS cache and check the IP address the name resolves to.
- Turn off VPN or proxy, or try another network.
- Site owners: check that the firewall or cloud security group allows ports 80 and 443 from everywhere, and that the server answers on its public IP.
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT in the screenshot API
The renderer connects through its own egress proxy, so the API reports a connection that could not be opened as ERR_CONNECTION_FAILED: status 502 with the message The target website could not be loaded (ERR_CONNECTION_FAILED). Not billed. A page that connects but loads too slowly is a different error: 408, The target website took too long to load.
Only the page's own load can fail a render. An image, script or frame of the page that fails with a network error does not: the page is captured as the browser shows it without that resource.
