Chrome network error · -201 · Certificate
ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID
Chromium's description
The server responded with a certificate that, by our clock, appears to either not yet be valid or to have expired. This could mean:
1. An attacker is presenting an old certificate for which they have managed to obtain the private key.
2. The server is misconfigured and is not presenting a valid cert.
3. Our clock is wrong.
Chrome shows it as net::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID, error -201. puppeteer and Playwright report the same name when a page fails to load in Chromium.
Common causes
- The site’s certificate expired and was not renewed.
- Your device’s date or time is wrong.
- An outdated operating system that does not know current root certificates.
How to fix ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID
- Check the device’s date, time and time zone.
- Update the operating system and browser.
- Site owners: renew the certificate and automate renewal (Let’s Encrypt with certbot or your host’s auto-renew).
ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID in the screenshot API
Certificate errors do not stop a render: the API's browser accepts the certificate and captures the page the server sends, so a screenshot of a site with this error works. It does not tell you whether the certificate is valid; use an SSL checker for that.
Only the page's own load can fail a render. An image, script or frame of the page that fails with a network error does not: the page is captured as the browser shows it without that resource.
